Moving to Columbia

Columbia, Maryland is a unique city because it is a “planned community” which contains ten different villages, that each operate on its own but are apart of the city. Columbia is located in Howard County, Maryland and is a suburb of Baltimore. Columbia was ranked number four as one of the “100 Best Places to Live” in 2006 by Money magazine, and in 2008 was ranked number eight. Much of Columbia’s economic growth and development is based on large companies located in the industrial section of the city which include General Electric, the U.S. Department of Defense and W.R. Grace and Company.

Columbia’s design was put into place to rid the city of any segregation, be it racial or economical. Each of the ten villages contains several neighborhoods with single-family homes, townhomes, condos or apartments and may have primary and secondary schools, parks and shopping centers. The villages include Wilde Lake, Harper’s Choice, Oakland Mills, Long Reach, Owen brown, Hickory Ridge, Dorsey’s Search, Kings Contrivance, River Hill and Town Center. The city also have three major interstates that run through the city including 895, 95 and 195, making traveling simple and quick.
